An Operating System is the software which interacts with the hardware of a PC and is the intermediary between the installed applications and the hardware, which includes peripheral devices such as a printer, a mouse or a keyboard. When you run software, it transmits requests to the OS using an API (Application Program Interface) and the contact is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to a personal computer, web servers also use an Operating System that serves as a host for any software installed on them, including script apps or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, and many others. A virtual machine can be generated on a physical one, so you'll be able to install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast to the physical server host Operating System.
Multiple OS in VPS Hosting
We provide as many as 3 different Linux distributions for the Operating System of our virtual private servers - Debian, CentOS and Ubuntu. These are among the most stable and reliable OSs available on the market and we provide all 3 rather than just 1 as we realize that you may want to set up some software with specific requirements regarding the Operating System it will run on. The latter is because each of the three Operating Systems has a huge support community behind it and there're different software applications you could install on the web server. Your OS selection will also determine what hosting Control Panel can be installed on the VPS if you would like to use one and for that reason we offer several Control Panels too. In case you decide that you need a different OS, our technical support can quickly wipe the current one and install the one that you need. We also offer an optional service to keep the OS on your VPS updated weekly.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Web Hosting
If you decide to purchase one of our dedicated servers, you will find three Operating Systems on the order page because we want to give you a wider choice regarding the system environment on the server as different apps may have specific requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian include different modules developed by their vast support communities, so you can select each of these OSs and take advantage of a reliable and secure web hosting service. Depending on your choice, you will also have different Control Panels to choose from. Of course, we can always replace the Operating System if the one you've selected in the beginning doesn't meet the requirements of the software that you intend to run. We can also upgrade your OS on a regular basis in order to keep it as secure as possible with our Managed Services upgrade package.
